How to Secure Your Sliding Doors in Charleston

In this blog entry, the professional Charleston residential lock installation team here at Charleston Locksmith Pro will detail some excellent tips for securing your sliding doors in Charleston.

Security Risks of Sliding Doors

• Standard locks are often easy to bypass

• Older doors can be lifted off their tracks

• Glass panels are easy to break without added protection

• Lack of visibility from the street makes them attractive to burglars

Signs That Your Sliding Doors Need Extra Security

• Loose or broken latch

• Glass is unprotected or easy to shatter

• Door wiggles or can be lifted off the track

• No alarm or sensor installed

Tips to Secure Sliding Glass Doors

1. Use a Security Bar or Track Rod

Place a strong rod or bar in the bottom track to stop the door from sliding open. A cut wooden dowel also works.

2. Upgrade the Door Lock

Replace basic latches with high-security sliding door locks. These offer better resistance to forced entry.

3. Add a Locking Pin

Install a pin that goes through the door frame. This stops the door from being lifted out of place.

4. Apply Security Film

Shatterproof film makes it harder to break the glass and slows down intruders.

5. Install Door Sensors and Alarms

Add contact sensors that alert you if the door is opened. Many work with smart home systems.

6. Install Motion-Activated Lights

Lights near the door can scare off intruders and help you see what’s happening at night.

7. Reinforce the Frame

Use metal plates or hardware to strengthen the door frame and prevent it from being kicked in.

8. Use Curtains or Blinds

Cover your doors at night to block the view inside and protect your privacy.
