What to Do If You Get Locked Out of Your Car in Charleston

Getting locked out of your car can be frustrating, stressful, inconvenient, and even dangerous – especially in the heat and humidity of Charleston. Whether you’ve misplaced your keys while walking the Battery or left them inside your car during a quick stop downtown, don’t panic. Here are some quick, practical, and easy-to-follow tips from the expert Charleston automotive locksmith service team here at Charleston Locksmith Pro to help you navigate a car lockout situation smoothly.

1. You’re Not Alone – Car Lockouts Happens to Millions

• Over 4 million Americans lock themselves out of their vehicles every year
• That’s nearly 11,000 drivers a day!
• If it happens to you, don’t worry – you’re not alone, and there’s a fast solution.

2. Stay Calm, Relaxed, and Safe

• Breathe and stay composed so you can think clearly
• Make sure you’re in a safe, well-lit location, and can stand away from oncoming traffic
• If the area feels unsafe, wait inside a nearby business or public place before our locksmith team arrives

3. Don’t Try to Force Entry Into Your Vehicle

• Avoid using hangers, shoelaces, or DIY tools to get in your vehicle
• Modern car locks are complex and easy to damage
• Forcing entry can break locks, trigger airbags, or lead to the need for expensive technica repairs

4. Call a Trusted Local Locksmith

Charleston has professional mobile locksmiths who specialize in car lockouts. Choose wisely, however. Charleston Locksmith Pro is your top choice for truly skilled, efficient – and affordable – locksmith assistance direct to your location anywhere in the Greater Charleston area.

5. What to Look for in a Locksmith During a Car Lockout

• Local business with proper licensing
• Response time within 15–30 minutes
• Experience with damage-free car entry
• Upfront, transparent pricing with no hidden fees
• Strong reviews from Charleston-area customers
• Insurance and certification for accountability
• Equipment for modern smart keys, push-starts, and luxury vehicles

6. Important Questions to Ask Your Automotive Locksmith

Before hiring a locksmith, ask these:

• What’s the total cost, including service and travel fees?
• Are you licensed and insured in Charleston?
• Do you guarantee damage-free entry?
• How quickly can you arrive?
• Can you unlock my vehicle’s make and model?
• Will you personally arrive, or are you dispatching someone else?
• Can you make a spare key or program a key fob on-site?
• Is the price fixed or could it change upon arrival?

7. Don’t Call the Police Unless It’s an Emergency

• Only call the police if a child or pet is locked inside
• Or if the vehicle is creating a traffic hazard
• For all other cases, rely on a professional locksmith

8. Use Roadside Assistance If Available

• AAA, your insurance, or your car manufacturer may cover lockouts
• Just know that wait times may be much, much longer than calling a local locksmith

9. Get a Spare Key Made

• Ask the locksmith about key duplication or fob programming
• Store your spare in a safe spot: wallet, with a friend, or under the car
• It’s an easy way to avoid this situation in the future!

10. What NOT to Do During a Car Lockout

• Don’t break a window unless it’s a true emergency
• Don’t hire a locksmith without checking reviews or pricing
• Don’t leave your car unattended in a high-traffic or unsafe area
